Eligibility: You may enter if 1) you have not been an ILDA Member in the past 10 years AND 2) you have not been a part-time or full-time employee of a current or previous ILDA Member in the past 10 years AND 3) you have never before won an ILDA Award (e.g., have never been listed on the credits of an ILDA Award).

Number of entries: You may submit up to three (3) videos that depict lasers being used for entertainment purposes. The entry processing fee is USD $10 if you submit one entry, $25 if you submit two entries, or $50 if you submit three entries.

Entry length: The maximum length of each video is four minutes. We suggest you keep the video shorter if possible, for best impact.

Safety: The laser usage shown in the video MUST comply with general safety standards, AND with the specific safety standards at the country and location of the performance. See the section “Safety and the ILDA Awards” below, for our requirements.

Entry rights: A piece is eligible 1) if you created the piece yourself (not as a team or group) AND 2) if you used no clipart or other content you did not create yourself AND 3) if you have the full and exclusive rights (Intellectual Property) to the laser portion of the entry.

Music: On the Entry Form below, list the name of the music piece, the performer(s) and source (album). Also, indicate whether you have the rights to the music — for example, if you composed it.

Video requirements:
     • MP4 or MOV format
     • Duration 4 minutes or less
     • Full HD resolution (1080i/p) or less
     • File size 300 MB or less
     • Name the video file with your name and your show title (e.g. “Jane Smith - Laser Extravaganza.mov“).This is important; it is the only way we can associate your uploaded file with your name.
     • The video must depict real lasers, recorded with a camera, camcorder or smartphone. No laser simulators, preview windows, or computer graphics.
     • The video must show one take, shot from a single vantage point. Cuts are allowed if needed to shorten the video.
     • If your entry requires further explanation, please do so as a voiceover or a personal explanation before the actual performance starts. Including your explanation, the video must not exceed an overall duration of four minutes.
     • Important: NO added or superimposed content. This means no titles, no graphics, no logos etc. Just the laser footage (and optional voiceover/personal explanation).

Rule acceptance: By entering you are accepting the rules on this page. Any non-compliance will lead to disqualification without prior notice, and any entry processing fees paid will not be returned. ILDA has the sole right to determine eligibility.

Entry processing fee: After filling out the Entry Form and submitting the videos, pay the entry processing fee using the “Donation” form on the Other payments page.
       ILDA cannot provide invoices, receipts or any other financial records except what is automatically generated by using these pages. If you need documentation for your records, please capture screenshots.
       The entry processing fee, once paid, cannot be returned even if an entry is found to be invalid or is disqualified.

Judging: Videos will be judged by an international jury having online access to all video files. Each judge will individually review all pieces. Judges may discuss their impressions with each other.
       The judges will then vote for their top three entries. Each judge’s favorite will get 3 points, their second choice will get 2 points, and their third choice will get 1 point.
       The entry receiving the most points will be the winner of the ILDA New Talent 2016 trophy. In case of a tie in the first voting, the judges will re-vote until there is a winner. This is because no ties are allowed — there will be only one winner per year.

Notification: After the judges make their decision, the winner of the New Talent search will be privately notified. They will be notified in time so they can make plans to attend, if possible, the ILDA Awards Banquet at the 2016 Conference which will be held November 8 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Public presentation: The winner will receive free admission to the ILDA Awards Banquet (normally around $250 for non-Members). During the Banquet, the winner will be publicly announced and will make an acceptance speech; this can be done by video if they cannot attend in person. ILDA will also promote the name of the winner and details about the winning entry at its website and other media.

Free Membership: The winner will receive a free Individual Membership for ILDA, a $130 value, for the remainder of 2016 (after the ILDA Awards Banquet) and all of 2017. The winner may choose to upgrade to a Corporate Membership; the free Individual Membership rate will be deducted from the Corporate rate. Memberships include free access to Skyzan laser safety software (a $299 value), discounts on LSO classes and ILDA events, and other Member benefits.

ILDA rights: ILDA may use the winning video, including stills, for promoting lasers in general and the New Talent search specifically. The winner will be given credit in any such ILDA uses. For example, ILDA may upload the video to the ILDA YouTube channel and to ILDA’s Dropbox, and may include the video on the compilation USB drive handed out to Awards Banquet attendees.

Contest status: Note that this is NOT an ILDA Award, as ILDA Awards are reserved for ILDA Members. The correct title is “ILDA New Talent”. The winner has won a talent search competition and has received a trophy, not an ILDA Award.

Dauer:
Jedes eingereichte Video darf eine Gesamtspielzeit von vier (4) Minuten nicht überschreiten. Wir empfehlen Teilnehmern eher eine kürzere Dauer für mehr Effekt.

Strahlensicherheit:
Der Lasereinsatz MUSS allgemeinen Sicherheitsstandards entsprechen UND in Übereinstimmung mit den spezifischen örtlich geltenden Sicherheitsstandards stehen. Mehr Informationen (in Englisch) gibt es weiter unten im Punkt “Safety and the ILDA Awards”.

Rechte:
Ein Beitrag ist zulässig, wenn
1) Sie die Darbietung selbst erstellt haben (nicht im Team oder als Gruppe) UND
2) wenn Sie keine Clipart oder anderweitige Inhalte eingesetzt haben, die nicht von Ihnen selbst stammen UND
3) wenn Sie über die vollen und uneingeschränkten Rechte (IP, Intellectual Property) für den Lasereinsatz des Beitrags innehaben.

Musik:
Bitte geben Sie im Einreichungsformular ggf. den Namen des Musikstücks, des Performers und der Quelle (z.B. Album) an. Geben Sie auch an, ob Sie ggf. selbst die Rechte an der Musik halten (zum Beispiel bei Eigenkompositionen).

Video-Anforderungen:
• MP4 oder MOV-Format
• Gesamtspielzeit maximal 4 Minuten oder weniger
• Full HD-Auflösung (1080i/p) oder weniger
• Dateigröße 300 MB oder weniger
• Benennen Sie die die Videodatei mit Ihrem Namen und dem Titel des Beitrags (z.B. “Sabine Mustermann - Laser Extravaganza.mov“). Die richtige Benennung ist ungeheuer wichtig, da es die einzige Möglichkeit für uns ist, die hochgeladene Datei Ihrem Namen zuzuordnen!!
• Das Video muss echte Laser zeigen, die mit einer Kamera, einem Camcorder oder einem Smartphone aufgezeichnet worden sind. Keine Lasersimulationen, keine Preview-Fenster oder Computergrafiken sind erlaubt!
• Das Video muss aus einer Einstellung / einem Take aus einem einzigen Betrachtungspunkt bestehen. Schnitte sind zum Kürzen des Videos erlaubt.
• Sollte Ihr Beitrag einer näheren Erläuterung bedürfen, so können Sie dies in Englisch mit einer Stimme aus dem Off (Voiceover) oder einer persönlichen, in englischer Sprache gehaltenen Erklärung vor der eigentlichen Darbietung tun. Dennoch darf die Gesamtspielzeit des Beitrags eine Länge von 4 Minuten nicht überschreiten.

Zustimmung zu den Regeln:
Durch die Teilnahme verpflichten Sie sich zur Einhaltung der auf dieser Seite beschriebenen Regeln. Verstöße führen zur Disqualifikation ohne Vorankündigung und ohne Rückerstattung der Schutzgebühr. ILDA behält sich das alleinige Recht vor, die Übereinstimmung mit den Regeln zu beurteilen. Der Rechtsweg ist ausgeschlossen.

Schutzgebühr:
Nach Ausfüllen des Einreichungsformulars und dem Hochladen des Videos werden Sie zur Zahlung der Schutzgebühr aufgefordert. Nutzen Sie dazu das “Donation” Formular auf der „Other payments“-Seite.
Über die vom System automatisch generierten Zahlungsbelege hinaus kann die ILDA keine Rechnungen, Belege oder andere Zahlungsaufstellungen liefern. Sollten Sie weitere Zahlungsbelege benötigen, fertigen Sie ggf. einen Screenshot der Seite an.
Einmal bezahlte Schutzgebühren können nicht rückerstattet werden. Selbst dann nicht, wenn eine Einreichung für ungültig befunden und disqualifiziert worden ist.

Ermittlung des Gewinners:
Die Videos werden durch eine internationale Jury beurteilt, die Zugang zu den Videos erhält. Jeder Juror wird persönlich alle Stücke beurteilen. Die Juroren können bei Bedarf Ihre Eindrücke und Erkenntnisse untereinander austauschen.
Jeder Juror wählt drei Beiträge aus. Der Favorit erhält 3 Punkte, die zweite Wahl erhält 2 Punkte und die dritte Wahl erhält 1 Punkt.
Der Beitrag mit den meisten Punkten ist der Gewinner der ILDA New Talent 2016-Trophäe. Im Fall von Punktegleichstand im ersten Durchgang wird sich die Jury so lange abstimmen, bis ein Gewinner feststeht, da keine zwei Gewinner zulässig sind — es gibt in jedem Jahr nur einen einzigen Gewinner.

Benachrichtigung:
Sobald das Votum der Jury feststeht, wird der Gewinner im Vorfeld zunächst persönlich benachrichtigt, um ihm ggf. die Möglichkeit zu geben, am ILDA Awards-Bankett teilzunehmen, 8 November in Baltimore/USA stattfinden wird.

Öffentliche Verkündung:
Der Gewinner erhält freien Eintritt zum ILDA Awards Bankett (der für Nicht-Mitglieder allein schon $250 kosten würde). Im Zuge der Veranstaltung wird der Gewinner offiziell verkündet und hat die Möglichkeit, eine Dankesrede zu halten. Sollte ein persönliches Erscheinen nicht möglich sein, kann dies auch per Video erfolgen. Die ILDA wird den Namen des Gewinners und weitere Details des Siegerbeitrags über ihre Website sowie ihre Presse- und Medienkanäle verbreiten.

Freie Mitgliedschaft:
Der Gewinner erhält eine kostenlose ILDA-Mitgliedschaft („Individual Membership“) im Wert von $130 für den Rest des Jahres 2016 (nach dem ILDA Awards Bankett) und das gesamte Jahr 2017. Dem Gewinner steht es frei, gegen Zahlung des Differenzbetrags ein Upgrade auf eine „Corporate Membership“ durchzuführen.

Rechte der ILDA:
Der ILDA wird das Recht eingeräumt, das Gewinnervideo, inklusive Standbildern, zur Förderung von Lasern in der Unterhaltung im Allgemeinen und zur Bewerbung der ILDA New Talent Search im Speziellen einzusetzen. Der Gewinner wird bei jeder Nutzung durch die ILDA namentlich genannt. Zum Beispiel wird die ILDA das Video auf den ILDA YouTube-Kanal und auf ihre ILDA Dropbox hochladen. Auch wird das Video auf dem USB-Stick mit den Gewinnern aller ILDA Awards enthalten sein, den alle Bankett-Teilnehmer halten werden.

Einordnung und Bezeichnung des Wettbewerbs:
Bitte beachten Sie, dass es sich bei diesem Wettbewerb und der Trophäe NICHT um einen ILDA Award handelt, da ILDA Awards allein ILDA-Mitgliedern vorbehalten sind. Die korrekte Bezeichnung des Wettbewerbs, bzw. des Gewinners ist “ILDA New Talent”. Der Gewinner hat also einen Talentwettbewerb der ILDA mit einer spezifisch daraufhin zugeschnittenen Auszeichnung und keinen ILDA Award gewonnen.

Dies ist eine Übersetzung der englischsprachigen Teilnahmebedingungen der ILDA New Talent Search-Seite. Im Falle von Abweichungen oder Zweifeln gelten die Bestimmungen in englischer Sprache.

Q: Are there categories for say beams or graphics? If not, how is a graphic piece judged against an atmospheric piece?

A: Entries in the New Talent competition are judged together; there are no subdivisions or categories.

The judges are looking for outstanding skills and talents, not just “is this show better than that show”.

As one Awards Committee member wrote: “What we are judging for these ‘New Talent’ entries are the creator's ability to make an exciting show, that is technically proficient. This has to do with judging how they address timing, pacing, color, laser placement, originally of content, and unique ideas of how they use the fixtures etc. These principles work whether it is a beam show or a graphics show or even a combo show.”

Q: If there are no categories, then is it possible to enter a multimedia show with limited laser content?

A: It can be entered, but that would be a waste of the entry fee! We are not looking for the best New Talent in any field.

ILDA — a laser association — is sponsoring a contest “looking for outstanding new talents in the laser entertainment industry.” While there can be some non-laser elements, it is the laser part that the judges are looking at.

Q: Does the quality of the entry video matter?

A: Judges will be told to concentrate on the video content, not the video quality.

That said, poor quality video, or distorted or low audio, does not help an entry. Judges now have a hurdle to get over (“this was really good despite the jiggling camera and the audio dropouts”). So please do send in the best video you’re able to do with your resources.

Q: Is there a minimum number of projectors to be used?

A: No, there is no restriction on equipment. You can use as many projectors as you want. You can use different effects including beams, graphics, gratings, etc. You can use non-laser equipment such as video projectors, stage lights, pyro — however, the judges will be focusing on the laser part of the entry.

Judges are looking to see how well you do with the equipment used in the video.

This is also a good place to point out that the contest is not necessarily looking for just traditional laser shows. One Awards Committee member wrote: “If laserists continue to think purely in terms to 'graphics and/or atmospherics' this immediately limits and confines the medium. All too often I've heard criticism from former colleagues saying that it is a 'limited' medium. I like Alex Hennig’s term 'creative interplay with lasers' and I think words like imagination, innovation, extending the boundaries and originality need to be included in the selection criteria.”

Q: Do I have to submit three entries?

A: You can submit one, two or three entry videos. It is up to you.

Entering two or three times may give you a better chance of winning. On the other hand, it may be better if you focus on making a single entry really good, instead of having two or three entries that are just “OK”.

Q: What format do you want for the entry video file? 25fps/30fps? NTSC/PAL? Audio format?

A: The video file must be in .MP4 or .MOV format. (See the Video Requirements section of the rules, earlier on this page, for additional requirements.)

Within the .MP4/.MOV format there are many options. You can choose the frames per second, NTSC vs. PAL, etc. It is up to you.

It would be very helpful if you can try out your video file on a few computers — Macs as well as PCs; older operating systems vs. new — and various video playback software. If the video plays on many different computers and software, then there should not be a problem when ILDA and the judges try to play it.

Q: Do I have to provide evidence that I designed the entry; for example, providing time sheets, animatics, etc.

A: No, just send in your entry.

If for some reason we have a problem with the content, we’ll contact you.

Q: Is this the only competition or is this going to be happening every year?

A: We plan to hold the New Talent search annually. Of course plans can change, but our intent is to find a new New Talent every year.

Q: Will I be competing against film industry 2D/3D animators?

A: Anyone can enter, as long as they have not been an ILDA Member, employed by an ILDA Member, or have won an ILDA Award as defined in the rules.

Any non-laser entries (e.g., film animation or video animation) will not be judged — this is a contest to find the best New Talent in the laser entertainment industry. But certainly 2D and 3D animators can use their talent to create laser frames and animations, so they are welcome to enter.

Q: I read somewhere that the deadline was July 31 2016. Now I see it is September 15 2016. When IS the deadline?

A: The deadline was originally July 31. At the May ILDA Board conference, the Board of Directors voted to extend the deadline to September 15. This may help hobbyists attending the SELEM meeting the month before, in North Carolina.

So the new (and final!) deadline is September 15 2016.
